Sensei Kevin Costello, head instructor at Judo Kai of Fairfield

About Us

Our lead instructor is Sensei Kevin Costello, a yodan (fourth degree Judo black belt).

Kevin Costello has been training in Judo for over 30 years. He began his training in 1995, earning his first degree Judo black belt in 2003, second degree black belt in 2011, third degree in 2017, and fourth degree in 2024. He competed and placed at the Local, State Senior, National Masters, and International Masters Levels. Kevin received his coaching certification through USA Judo in 2010 and is currently certified at the Continental Level by USA Judo.

Kevin is a well-rounded martial artist whose martial arts journey started ten plus years before he found Judo. In addition to holding a fourth degree black belt in Judo, Kevin also holds black belts in Kempo, Karate, and USJA Ju-Jitsu.

Kevin has a unique ability to connect with his students--fostering confidence, honing technique, and building the mental toughness necessary for competition, self-defense, and life.

Program History

The Judo Kai martial arts school began in 1963 with the founding of Judo Kai of Woodbridge by Sensei George Hamlin. Through Judo Kai of Woodbridge, Sensei Hamlin positively influenced judo in the New Jersey area for decades, helping many people reach their potential both on and off the mat.

New Jersey's Judo Kai truly became a family affair; after Sensei Hamlin's retirement, his student--and Kevin's brother--Chris Costello picked up the mantle at the Woodbridge location for many years. Judo Kai has always striven to contribute to the community, developing skills and confidence in the people it serves. With Sensei Hamlin's blessing, that tradition will continue at Judo Kai of Fairfield.
